Spiritual Counseling vs. Therapy: What They Both Offer

While there is often overlap between therapy and spiritual direction, each invites a different kind of inquiry. Both support healing, growth, and our innate movement toward wholeness, while attending to different dimensions of human experience.

THERAPY

Explores psychological wounds, patterns, and relationships

Seeks healing, insight, emotional resilience, and greater freedom

Helps us understand and navigate life's challenges

Focuses on thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and relationships

Views symptoms as meaningful messengers

Cultivates emotional resilience, integration, and psychological flexibility

Strengthens the ego so it can function with wisdom and responsibility

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

Explores one's relationship with the Sacred, Mystery, or Divine

Seeks deeper listening, discernment, and spiritual attunement

Invites us to discover what life may be asking of us through those challenges

Focuses on meaning, purpose, calling, and spiritual awakening

Listens for the deeper invitations and movements of Spirit within experience

Cultivates spiritual discernment, surrender, and deeper trust in the unfolding of life

Invites the transformation of the ego from petty ruler to loyal servant of the Big S Self

Experiential Modalities & Why They're So Effective

While conversation is an important part of psychotherapy, not all healing happens through words and insights alone. At times, the deepest layers of experience are held in images, symbols, sensations, memories, dreams, creativity, and the wisdom of the body itself.

For this reason, I integrate a range of experiential and depth-oriented approaches into my work, including Jungian Sandplay Therapy, SoulCollage®, expressive arts, guided imagery, mindfulness practices, and body-centered awareness. These modalities offer alternative pathways into the therapeutic process, helping us access aspects of ourselves that may be difficult to articulate or fully understand through discussion alone. They also support connection to present-centered awareness, which is where change actually happens.

The psyche often communicates through symbol, archetype, metaphor, image, sensation, and feeling. Experiential approaches can gently bypass habitual defenses and cognitive patterns, allowing us to encounter what is asking for attention in a manner that feels safe, direct, and deeply respectful.

These methods are not used as techniques imposed upon the client, but as invitations — creative and embodied forms of inquiry that support greater self-awareness, emotional healing, integration, and personal transformation. They may be used alongside traditional psychotherapy, spiritual exploration, or as stand-alone modalities when appropriate.

Each person's path is unique. Some clients find healing through conversation and reflection; others benefit from engaging imagination, creativity, movement, or symbolic expression. Together, we discover the approaches that most resonate and offer the best support for your growth, resilience, and unfolding sense of self.

Jungian Sandplay Therapy

A powerful depth-oriented modality developed by Dora Kalff, Jungian Sandplay Therapy creates a protected space in which the personal and collective unconscious can emerge through the symbolic language of the archetypes. Often described as a form of active imagination, Jungian Sandplay is both gentle and profound, supporting healing, integration, and transformation for children, adolescents, and adults.

Expressive Arts

Art-making or art-playing offers another language of the psyche. Through drawing, painting, writing, collage, clay, and other creative processes, clients often discover insights, emotions, and inner resources that might otherwise remain hidden. No artistic experience is required. The emphasis is not on creating art, but on using creativity as a vehicle for exploration, healing, and self-discovery.

Guided Imagery and Visualization

Guided imagery engages the imagination as a pathway to healing. Through symbolic imagery, felt experience, and inner dialogue, clients can access deeper layers of awareness, reconnect with disowned or forgotten aspects of self, and discover new possibilities for growth, healing, and resilience.

Body-Centered Awareness

Our bodies often carry stories, emotions, and patterns that exist outside conscious awareness. Drawing from mindfulness, Gestalt, somatic awareness, and contemplative traditions, I help clients develop a deeper relationship with the body's wisdom. This work can support emotional regulation, trauma healing, increased presence, and a greater sense of wholeness.

SoulCollage®

SoulCollage® is a creative and contemplative process that uses imagery, imagination, and intuition to explore the many dimensions of the self. Through the creation of personally meaningful collage cards, individuals gain access to inner wisdom, deepen self-understanding, and cultivate an ongoing relationship with the symbolic life of the psyche.
